Ponte de Sor é uma agradável cidade, sede de um vasto concelho, situada na extensa região Alentejana, bem na junção com a anterior região Ribatejana, é caracterizada pelas lezírias do Sor, grandes campos de cultivo que circundam a cidade.

Ponte de Sor deve o seu nome à primitiva ponte romana, que integrava o percurso da 3ª via militar que ligava Lisboa a Mérida e a que faz referência um marco miliário do tempo do imperador Marco Aurélio Probo, não se tendo, contudo, informações claras de ocupações humanas anteriores aos Romanos.

Esta foi uma região de fronteiras muito instáveis durante a reconquista Cristã, tendo sido o território entregue à Ordem dos Templários, e posteriormente conquistada pela Ordem de S. Bento.

Ponte de Sor apresenta diversos pontos de interesse como as suas igrejas Matriz (século XVII) e da Misericórdia, a Capelinha dos Paços do Calvário, as Capelas de São Pedro e Santo António (século XVII), de São Sebastião ou do Senhor das Almas, ou mesmo outros monumentos como a Ponte sobre a ribeira de Sor, que originariamente seria de origem romana, mas por ter ruído foi erguida esta outra durante o reinado de D. João VI, o edifício dos Paços do Concelho, ou a orgulhosa Fonte da Vila.
Vale a pena conhecer também o núcleo Megalítico de Montargil ou a Necrópole de Santo André, ou os moinhos da Tramaga, ou mesmo apreciar a calmaria da zona ribeirinha de Sor.

A natureza circundante é generosa, destacando-se a grande Barragem de Montargil que atrai inúmeros visitantes pelas suas boas condições para a prática das mais diversas actividades, e também pela existência de boas infra-estruturas turísticas.

Ponte de Sor is a pleasant city, the seat of a vast municipality, located in the extensive Alentejo region, right at the junction with the previous Ribatejana region, it is characterized by the Sor lezírias, large cultivated fields that surround the city.

Ponte de Sor owes its name to the primitive Roman bridge, which was part of the route of the 3rd military route that connected Lisbon to Mérida and to which a milestone from the time of Emperor Marco Aurélio Probo refers, however, there is no clear information on human occupations before the Romans.

This was a region with very unstable borders during the Christian reconquest, having been the territory handed over to the Order of the Templars, and later conquered by the Order of St. Benedict.

Ponte de Sor has several points of interest such as its Matriz (17th century) and Misericórdia churches, the Capelinha dos Paços do Calvário, the Chapels of São Pedro and Santo António (17th century), São Sebastião or Senhor das Almas, or even other monuments such as the Bridge over the Ribeira de Sor, which was originally of Roman origin, but because of its collapse this other one was built during the reign of D. João VI, the Paços do Concelho building, or the proud Fonte da Vila .
It is also worth visiting the Megalithic nucleus of Montargil or the Necrópolis of Santo André, or the Tramaga mills, or even enjoying the calm of the riverside area of Sor.

The surrounding nature is generous, with emphasis on the large Montargil Dam, which attracts countless visitors due to its good conditions for practicing a wide range of activities, and also due to the existence of good tourist infrastructure.

Ponte de Sor is proud of its traditional crafts, namely decorative marble pieces, wicker basketry, cork from the important cork industry in the region's abundant cork oak forests, and also various wood works.
