The initial toponym of the parish will have been "LAGOAS", for the numerous and large lagoons that formed during the rainy season, however, the village came to be called "FERREIRAS", a toponym that had its origin in a family nicknamed "Ferreira", which here will have settled in the mid-20th century. xix and that probably had significant importance for the village.
It can be concluded, by the archaeological estate found in the parish, that since very distant times man settled in these lands, because in Cerros Altos were found identifying elements of the human presence, dating back to the century. Another record occurred in Ataboeira, where some coins and fragments of tegula, dating from the Roman period of occupation, were discovered. Also of the Muslim presence there are several records, in which the most visible are at the Architectural level, which greatly influenced the design of our "Typical" chimneys, the white color of the houses and unique Steel Trees and that all these elements still today constitute a reference point of Moorish culture.
Legend has it that in "Lagoas" (Old name attributed to the place that is now ferreiras), lived a family named Ferreira, a family that had two sisters who were seamstresses. The people of the place at that time, (decades ago), had to sew all their clothes in these so-called sisters, "the Ferreiras", who made all the clothing of the population of the place and surroundings.
So whenever someone wanted to order new clothes, he'd say, "I'm going to the Ferreiras."
As the years went by, word of mouth, ferreiras' name was passing, leaving the place known by this name no longer lagoas.
Ferreiras celebrates his birthday on July 12, having as Orago /Patron Saint Joseph.
