Alvor is associated with Portus Hannibalis, as a port founded by the Carthaginian general Aníbal [1], as mentioned by João de Barros - "Alvor, a town in the Kingdom of the Algarve, was known as Porto de Aníbal, as Florian says" [2]. In 716, in the course of the Muslim Invasion, it was conquered by the Moors and began to be referred to as Albur or Alvor, the name of the mountain where the castle of Alvor was built [3], of which only vestiges remain. [4] History Alvor was regained by D. Sancho I on June 3, 1189, but lost shortly thereafter, after which it was definitively inserted in Portugal in 1250 with the conquest of the Algarve by D. Afonso III [4] By decree of D. Afonso V, Alvor was inserted in the domains of the Count of Faro, and the title of Count of Alvor was created in 1683 by D. Pedro II, being extinguished during the Távoras Process, by the condemnation of the 3rd Count of Alvor, Francisco de Assis de Távora. In Alvor, on 25 October 1495, the king of Portugal, D. João II, died. Shortly afterwards, D. Manuel elevated it to a county seat town, a status that he would lose at the beginning of the 19th century. The small municipality was constituted only by the village and had, in 1801, 1,288 inhabitants. In 1975 the Alvor Agreement was signed there, signed between the Portuguese government and the three main liberation movements in Angola.
