The city of Silves was once the capital of the Algarve and ceased to be so when the River Arade silted up. But this was not the only moment in history when Silves played a key role in the region. At the time of the Moors, Silves was an important centre of government, trade and culture and extended its influence throughout the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
There are many Islamic remains in Silves and they are very well documented and preserved in its museums and cultural centres, which are definitely worth a visit. Silves has beaches, specifically in Armação de Pêra, but it's not for the beaches that this town is becoming increasingly famous and visited.
Located in the interior of the Algarve, a few kilometres from the sea, Silves is attracting more and more tourists who are looking for an Algarve that is different from the one you can visit in the most popular tourist destinations. In Silves, you can discover an Algarve full of history, culture and authenticity.
Another curious detail of this town is the existence of a reddish-coloured rock in the vicinity, the famous Grés de Silves, a rock that was used in the construction of its castle, which has red tones that give it a very peculiar appearance, different from the rest of Portugal's castles.
There are many things to discover in Silves. One of them is the Old Bridge over the River Arade, which today only has pedestrian access. Despite its name, the old viaduct is probably of medieval origin. It's a beautiful motif for a souvenir photograph; what's more, the bridge offers a picturesque panorama of the river and the castle.
We recommend leaving the car in the car park by the River Arade and discovering the streets on foot. However, in the summer heat the road to the upper part of town is steep and strenuous, but it's still worth it.
The Archaeological Museum in the Praça do Município has a wide variety of exhibits on display, which tell the complex and diverse history of this ancient city and its surroundings. Silves Cathedral with its large churchyard was built on the foundations of the old Mosque. This historic building is worth seeing and reminds us that, until 1577, Silves was the seat of the Bishop of the Algarve.
