Bonita vila tipicamente alentejana, Fronteira encontra-se situada na margem esquerda da ribeira de Avis, a norte da cidade de Estremoz e a sudoeste da cidade de Portalegre.

Os vestígios de ocupação humana nesta localidade remontam a mais de 10 mil anos, como comprovam os inúmeros monumentos megalíticos, entre os quais se salientam cerca de 30 antas e os dólmenes da Necrópole Megalítica da Herdade Grande ou as rochas gravadas da Herdade dos Pintos.

A sua fundação é atribuída ao Rei D. Dinis, em virtude de ter mandado construir o Castelo de que ainda hoje restam algumas ruínas.

De destacar, o lugar de Atoleiros, muito próximo de Fronteira, onde ocorreu a Batalha dos Atoleiros, em 1384, a primeira de uma série de batalhas decisivas para a manutenção da independência portuguesa durante a crise dinástica de 1383-1385, em que as forças castelhanas foram derrotadas pelo exército comandado por D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.

Em Fronteira, encontram-se diversos monumentos dignos de registo, nomeadamente, a Igreja Matriz, as Igrejas do Espírito Santo, do Senhor dos Mártires, a Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha, o edifício dos Paços do Concelho, o pelourinho e até a estação dos caminhos-de-ferro com os seus painéis de azulejos da autoria de Leopoldo Battistini, retratando cenas da vida rural.

A pretty typical Alentejo village, Fronteira is located on the left bank of the Avis stream, north of the city of Estremoz and southwest of the city of Portalegre.

Traces of human occupation in this location date back more than 10,000 years, as evidenced by the numerous megalithic monuments, among which around 30 dolmens and the dolmens of the Megalithic Necropolis of Herdade Grande or the engraved rocks of Herdade dos Pintos stand out.

Its foundation is attributed to King D. Dinis, by virtue of having ordered the construction of the Castle, of which some ruins still remain today.

Of note is the place of Atoleiros, very close to Fronteira, where the Battle of Atoleiros took place in 1384, the first of a series of decisive battles for the maintenance of Portuguese independence during the dynastic crisis of 1383-1385, in which the forces Castilians were defeated by the army commanded by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.

In Fronteira, there are several monuments worth mentioning, namely, the Mother Church, the Churches of Espírito Santo, of Senhor dos Mártires, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha, the building of the Town Hall, the pillory and even the railway station with its tile panels by Leopoldo Battistini, depicting scenes of rural life.

Endowed with a lavish surrounding nature and abundant vegetation, this village offers beautiful landscapes and the possibility of various sports and leisure activities, offering the Ecotourism Center of Ribeira Grande, which has a river beach, swimming pools, a pedestrian path and an astronomical observatory equipped with the most current technology.
