Alandroal, in the lands of this county grow oleanders, or alandros, whose wood is used in local handicrafts, and hence the origin of the toponym.
As a prominent event, it is worth mentioning the explosion of a gunpowder warehouse, which occurred on January 14, 1659, which caused several deaths, mostly university students from Évora, captained by the Jesuit Fr. Francisco Soares, and who were replacing the army fighting for victory in the Battle of the Lines of Elvas.
With regard to the historical and monumental heritage, the Castle of Alandroal stands out, where the door flanked by towers and a horseshoe arch, made of marble from the region, stand out; the Castle of Terena, formed by a walled enclosure, with cubes, a keep and two doors, one flanked by towers; and the Fortress of Juromenha, whose bastioned works were built during the War of Restoration and brought down the defensive lines to a relative proximity to the Guadiana River, being a natural border line. Of the existing ruins, the old Chamber and the Senate House stand out.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption of Good News has a patriotic and religious significance. In 1340 the Moors invaded Andalusia, and the queen, wife of Alfonso XI of Castile, had the current church built there, thanks to the help that the king gave to his son-in-law Alfonso IV, in the battle of Salado. It is a fourteenth-century Gothic temple, crenellated and with slaughterhouses. It is classified as a national monument.
The numerous megalithic remains are also worth mentioning.
